Mermaid Sighting: Paw-sitively Wonderful!

Here at Mermaid Cottages, combing whimsical art and mermaids is one of our favorite things. Just look at these fabulous creations! Connie, the owner of Paws and Paddles Cottage, sent us a picture of her mermaids that will be making the trip to Tybee soon!

Photo thanks to Connie Stanley. Wonderful mermaids made of palm fronds!

Connie said these wonderful ladies were created in Florida and made out of palm fronds! Is there anything better than upcycled art…we certainly think not! Connie, thank you so much for sharing your mermaids with us. We can’t wait to see them on Tybee soon!

Have you seen a mermaid? We’d love it see it! You can send your sightings and stories to us at diane@mermaidcottages.com…you sighting could be the next feature right here on our blog! We look forward to hearing form you soon!

Tybee Sea Turtle Season Off and Running!

imagesource.com

We are so excited! Sea turtle season here on Tybee Island began back in May and we already have four nests! The workers and volunteers of the Tybee Sea Turtle Project have been out each morning on their dawn patrols, diligently scouting the beaches to make sure nests are discovered and cared for properly.

So far, two nests have been discovered in the North Beach area of the island. There have also been two documented nests in the mid-island area around the 7th and 8th Street crossovers. Only one false crawl has occurred and that was right in front of the De Soto Hotel. A false crawl is when a turtle comes on land but, for some reason, does not leave a nest. No one really knows what might cause a false crawl, but it could certainly be light pollution or noise in the beach area. Of course, false crawls are common in undeveloped areas as well. The best thing we can do to help our sea turtles nest successfully is to be respectful of them! Make sure to turn off lights after dark, keep the noise down, and remove anything from the beach that may be blocking the dunes. Doing these things will help nesting mothers go about their business without being disturbed.

Like Looking In A Mirror

One of our newest pet friendly Mermaid Cottages is Made In The Shade.  Yesterday, we posted a photo of a mirror on display in our beautiful Tybee Island bungalow and it got an immediate response.

Mermaid friends Melissa and Alan recently returned from a wonderful vacation to Rome, Italy.  While there they rented an apartment and hanging on the wall in that Italian apartment?  Bellissima!

Mama Mia!

What do you think?

We say when in Rome…do as the Tybee Islanders do…

Hang a great mirror and you’ve got it made in the shade!

Arrivederci, Roma!  Ahoy, Tybee!

…and to Melissa and Alan?

Grazie tanto, y’all!

Guest Pet Blogger: The World According To Maddie

Just in case you hadn’t noticed, Mermaid Cottages loves our pet guests!  We love them so much we always make sure there’s a fresh supply of our famous Beach Bum Biscuits and complimentary Guest Pet Tags to welcome them.

One of our recent pet guests had such a howling good time we invited her to be a Guest Pet Blogger for our Beach Bum Biscuits Dog Tales on Facebook.  Here to share her terrific Tybee adventures and tales from her most recent Tybee Tides Cottage visit is Maddie.  Take it away, Maddie!

Miss Diane asked my mommy if I’d share my Tybee trips with other dogs so they’d be as informed as their human parents.  As you can see from the pictures I like to stay at Tybee Tides.  There is a great fenced yard for playing ball and I even know where to look for the tennis balls Mom left on our first visit two years ago.  The front porch is perfect for naps and dog watching.  Because it’s on the marsh my parents love the view, especially the sunsets.  I prefer to check out all the dogs that walk past with their humans.

It is easy to make new friends on Tybee, both human and dog.  I have met a lot of guests on the island, as well as locals.  On my last visit, May 26-June 5, I finally got to meet Miss Diane’s dogs, Danny and Sophie!

A good way to make friends is to take your humans on very long walks.  I always enjoy the back river pier where my parents usually see some dolphins playing and get all excited ( this is a good time to ask for another Beach Bum Biscuit because they aren’t paying attention to how many you’ve already had!).

On the subject of Beach Bum Biscuits, and it is always a good subject, be sure to locate the fresh jar that will be in your cottage.  This is important so you know where to sit and look expectedly.  My Mommy always stops at Seaside Sisters to buy bags to take home and also buys extra bags to take as gifts for my friends back in Orlando, FL.  I’m glad she doesn’t expect me to share mine!

Tybee Island and Mermaid Cottages is my #1 choice for vacation.  I give it 4 paws and a tail up!  I hope to be there this fall and will tell my parents to take more pictures.  Until then, happy sniffing to all!

LOOK BACK OFTEN

by Cottage Cheese

We say it often around here. Each one of the Mermaid Cottages has a soul of its own and it’s a wonderful feeling to step through the door and feel as if you’re home.  Whether it’s the vintage feel or the warmth of the fabrics or the knick knacks of a simpler time, it’s always good to remember happy memories and the laughter we’ve shared.

We’re all on a journey and if we’re lucky enough we get to meet lots of great people and learn lots about life and hopefully share a thing or two with others along the way.  In every life the time will come when some people leave us and pass on to wherever you believe good souls go.  Sometimes we wonder where they’ve gone and if we’ll see them again.

My dad has been gone for several years now and he left us at a time when I was pretty sure of who I was.  Funny.  Even now I have a self image of myself and it’s as if I know I’ve gotten older, but so long as I’m just bopping along  I’m frozen in time.  That is until I happen to glance at a mirror.

I never once remember feeling I had much in common with my dad.  He was an older dad from a generation that was a lot different from mine and so we were on different paths.  Or so it seemed.  Just like all the loved ones that have passed on, from time to time I can feel them around me and I do wonder.  Where did they go?  Can they see me?

Imagine my surprise when I got my answer one day as I went to check myself out in the mirror.  I’ve never been in danger of being mistaken for a cover model, but there have been times I’ve thought, “Hmmm…not bad.”  Yet, I’ve always tried to remember to at least take a peek before advancing out into the world and then, BOOM, there he was.  I no longer had to wonder where my dad had gone.

Apparently, my dad hangs out in mirrors these days.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a mirror in my home or somewhere on the road.  He just hangs out.  Or, lurks, I sometimes think.  Then, lest I forget and stop to take a gander there he is.  Staring back.  The face looking at me so familiar.  I share something with my dad that I hadn’t given much thought.  Our DNA.

Now, we could debate all day if this is heaven or hell for me or him.  But, what’s the use.  It is what it is.  I have become my father.  I may kind of, sort of, maybe, if I tell the truth…oh, well.  I’ve tried bobbing and weaving and sneaking up on the mirror, but he’s still there.  I guess that’s one benefit to being a part of the spirit world.  Supersonic speed.  I look and say, “Heaven help me.  I look like Dad.”  He looks back and says, “You wish.”   I’ve come to the conclusion that I just need to smile when I look in the mirror.  It may be the only one I get that day.

If there’s any advice I can give to any of you it’s make good memories.  The time will come when they’re all you’ve got.  Let the other stuff go and give yourself a good laugh.  It’s a lot like a stay at Mermaid Cottages.  Leave all your worries at the door and step back in time to good memories and the laughter of days gone by.

Take a step into Little Fish Cottage and you’ll see what I mean.

Now.  Don’t you feel better?

Happy Father’s Day, Big Roy.  Happy Father’s Day to all you guys that have little bits of DNA roaming this world.  Happy Father’s Day to anyone that’s ever held out his hand and said, “Come on.  Let’s go for a walk.”

It’s COTTAGE CHEESE.  I’m still tossing up curds and still doing it my whey.
